Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of dental personnels on the electronic medical record system. The subjects in this study were 281 dental personnels who worked in dental hospitals and clinics in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. A self-administered survey was conducted from January 30 to February 15, 2011, and the statistical package SPSS WIN 11.5 was employed to analyze the collected data. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. 76.8 percent felt the need for the EMR system. 82.6 percent of the users replied that the system affected their profit, and 76.8 percent answered that the system served to boost profit. 2. As for the treatment-related efficiency of the EMR, the system was considered to be most efficient in terms of the utilization of patient data, followed by management of patient counseling, substitution of paper charts, diagnosis, combined treatment and profit increase. 3. The biggest problem that they faced during the use of the EMR was the deteriorated performance of the system and the network such as frequent breakdown. The second biggest problem was that the help service, maintenance and operating support were not sufficient, and the third greatest problem was that the system just provided radiographs. The separate operation of the system and paper charts that gave them inconvenience was the fourth biggest problem, and the fifth largest problem was that it¡¯s just possible to make a simple insurance claim. The sixth biggest problem was that the system only offered simple oral pictures. 4. Regarding the relationship between experience of using the EMR and awareness of its informatization effect, the users considered the system to have a better informatization effect in terms of the utilization of the Internet and EDI claim than the nonusers, and the gap between the two was statistically significant. 5. Concerning the relationship between experience of using the EMR and awareness of problems with informatization, the nonusers replied there were more problems with the system than the users in relation to economic burden, unskilled use of computer, fear for the possible loss of patient data, insufficient education, and inadequate standardization of dental information. The gap between the two was statistically significant. 6. As to the relationship between awareness of the necessity of the installation of the EMR and perception of its informatization effect, the respondents who felt the need for that replied that the system was of more use for the use of the Internet, EDI claim, production and utilization of all sorts of statistical data, cooperation with other medical institutions, improvement of the image of dental hospital or clinic and patient satisfaction, and the gap between them and the others was statistically significant.
